GHORBA Trail Clinic: October 30-31

Posted by Ryan Spates in S&S Trails Blog on Nov. 26, 2010 - 2:43 pm

S&S Trail Services completed a weekend-long training session in Houston at the request of GHORBA (Greater Houston Off-Road Bicycling Association), and it was a smashing success! Many thanks go to Russell Adams and the other officers and board members of the club who were instrumental in pulling the event together.

The classroom portion of the training was taught at a newly-opened library next to the Anthills trails, where the dirt-training part of the class was held later in the weekend. Our crew leader Chuck was finally able to attend one of our trainings since it was held in Houston, and he said it was great to learn the theory behind the applied work he’d been doing with us for several months.

National Trail Symposium

S&S Trail Services was well represented at the National Trail Symposium in Chattanooga. With Susan attending the conference and networking in sessions and Ryan manning the Professional Trail Builders Association (PTBA) Booth for the length of the event, S&S was highly visible. Our new flyers, compliments of Ideaschema , look really nice and garnered a lot of attention.

After taking the summer off to do some work and sightseeing in the northern U.S., S&S Trails returned to Texas to finish up the trail construction project at Double Lake Recreation Area in Coldspring. The other company that we partnered with, Progressive Trail Design out of Arkansas, arrived to build most of their portion of the contract over a 21 day period in the fall.

Most of the crew that had worked with us during the spring returned to help us complete the project, with the exception of Brian who had accepted a maintenance position with a church camp closer to his home in Huntsville. In his place, we had the pleasure of working with Dan, who was a friend of Chuck and Mike’s from Houston. Dan was finishing up his training to be a licensed massage therapist, and in the meantime he had some time to spare to come work for us, which was a great help.

Texas Society for Ecological Restoration: November 5-6

Posted by Ryan Spates in Uncategorized on Nov. 7, 2010 - 2:55 pm

S&S Trails were invited by Kay Jenkins from TPWD to speak at the Texas Society for Ecological Restoration annual conference held in Tyler. This is a small, but very valuable conference that brings together people from around the state of Texas that are experts in the fields of forestry, biology, ecology, and native ecosystems. This year they wanted to add a trails component, to discuss with participants the nuts and bolts of integrating sustainable trail systems into sensitive natural areas.

Ryan was otherwise engaged building trail at Barton Creek West in Austin with the local crew, and since Susan was still recuperating from her ankle injury, she decided to commute up to Tyler to speak at the conference. The property where the conference was held was beautiful, and the onsite accommodations were comfortable and economical. After visiting with folks and putting last-minute touches on her presentation on Thursday evening, Susan presented her talk on Friday morning and it was very well received. In addition to discussing the basics of sustainable natural surface trail design and construction, Susan also showed a series of pictures from a trail renovation project in Tyler State Park that Kay had helped to organize a few years prior.
